My four-year-old has a lot of questions about Christmas.
One particularly late evening after decorating our tree, I called both of my small, wide-eyed boys downstairs to share a dash of Christmas wonder mixed with a weary warning – “Santa is watching. Time to go to sleep.”
“Is Santa watching me through that window,” my four-year-old asked?
“Gosh, no!” I thought to myself, drawing closed the blinds. “Santa knows what’s in your heart,” I said, going on to explain how Santa is busy at the North Pole and probably very short staffed this year.
Enter Buddy, our Elf on the Shelf doll who is displayed in our home during the holidays and serves as a reminder to my boys to always be kind.
For all the "Dear Santa" letters written, calls to the Santa Hotline, and Santa-tracking NORAD apps, the greatest impact on our household decision to “be nice” has come from seeing Buddy our elf, live, face-to-face.
