A number of years ago, I had the opportunity to host nearly 40 Brazilian financial services professionals in Dallas. It was amazing to me the things and objects that elicited excitement and awe by the group. Police cars were a big hit. At our lunch stop, there were two police cars in the parking lot and nearly everyone wanted his or her picture taken with the police cars.
I asked the translator, “what’s with all the excitement around American police cars?”
“It’s Hollywood,” she explained. “They see police cars in the movies and to them, it’s an opportunity to connect with American pop culture.”
Another vexing highlight of the trip was squirrels. Every time we saw a squirrel, out came the cameras.
Reflecting on that, I think about my dog, and about the distractions squirrels can create. Squirrel!!! Professionally, it’s easy to chase squirrels. Or if you prefer – bright and shiny objects, the next big idea, the cool and stylish fad of the day. It feels good to be on the cutting edge.
